I am going to show you how you can take an outdated space you loathe and turn it into an updated space you love in as little as a weekend changing these 4 things!

Let’s start with the vanity. Is your vanity golden oak? This one is outdated to say the least.  The initial thought is always “I can’t imagine that we could do anything to this to make it look better”

…BUT WE CAN!

Here is how we did it…

Begin by removing the hardware and the doors from the frame.

Step 1)  Sand the doors and frame with 220 grit sandpaper.

Step 2)  Clean with Krud Kutter . This acts as a cleaner, deglosser in case you missed something* and removes all dust from sanding.

Step 3)  Prime it with Sherwin Williams’ Multi-purpose latex primer tinted Gray.  (I used gray primer because I was painting the vanity gray).

I always start with brushing the paint into the corners.

Then I finish up with rolling the flat areas and sides with a low nap mohair roller.

Let Dry.

Step 4)  Lightly sand with a fine grit sanding sponge.

Step 5)  Caulk any cracks or any imperfections. Let dry.

Diva Tip:  I always like to caulk after I prime so I can see any gaps and/or imperfections

Step 6)  To make a builder-grade cabinet look more like a custom piece of furniture, we added furniture feet that we purchased at Home Depot. These small touches have huge impact. Your builder grade vanity now looks more custom with fake feet!

Step 7)  Apply one coat of Sherwin Williams satin enamel in SW7019 Gauntlet Gray.   (Again, I started brushing the inside corners and areas that are hard to reach with a roller)

Then finished the flat sections with a mohair roller.  Let Dry.

Step 8)  Lightly sand with fine sanding sponge. Wipe clean. Repeat step #7.

Step 9)  Re-install doors.

Step10)  Add hardware

*Deglosser should not be used in place of sanding…DO BOTH!

What about this plate-glass mirror? Have you ever tried to remove one of these??? Disaster! If you are lucky enough to get it off without breaking it, you will have a whole mess of sheetrock to replace.

Once again you say…”It’s hard to imagine that we could do anything to this to make it look better”

…BUT WE CAN!

This is one of my favorite DIY  bathroom ideas. Here is how we did it…

Instructions for DIY Bathroom Ideas Mirror:

Step 1)  We cut picture molding (window casing would work just as well) to size and adhered it directly to the mirror using Liquid Nails.

Step 2)  We caulked it with paintable caulk. Let dry

Step 3)  We primed it using the same multi-purpose gray paint. Let dry.

Step 4)  We painted it in the same Gauntlet Gray Satin enamel. Let dry.

Step 5)  We finished it off with Modern Masters Metallic Silver and Modern Masters Metallic Black Pearl metallic paint.

Now…it looks like an expensive framed mirror.

What about this light fixture? Once again you say…”It’s hard to imagine that we could do anything to make it look better” and what do I say???

Nope! Not this time! It’s gotta go. Some things are not worth saving. If this had been a nicer fixture, we could have taken it down, removed the light bulbs and globes, spray painted it, and rehung it for an updated look.

Instead, I replaced it with an updated strip light so that we wouldn’t have to mess with moving the electrical wires or filling a huge hole where the light was attached.

As far as the walls are concerned, the border needs to be stripped; the walls repaired if necessary; primed and then painted in an updated color. We used Sherwin Williams Emerald zero VOC tinted SW6143 Basket Beige.

So, we painted the vanity and put feet on it, trimmed out the mirror, updated the light fixture and painted the walls. With just these 4 DIY bathroom ideas we have transformed this space into something you can be proud of!

All it needs now are some new accessories and its finished ….

 and BEAUTIFUL!

Update: I don’t know why it never occurred to me that the pictures in this post may seem strange since they are obviously not in a bathroom. This DIY Bathroom Ideas transformation was done for the 2015 Home and Garden’s Trendsetter of the Year contest. The before and after bathroom was revealed on stage during my presentation.
